About New York

The state of New York sits in the north-eastern area of America and is famous for being home to New York City, one of the most well known on the planet as well as the most populated in the country. New York City is known as the cultural financial, transportation, and manufacturing center of the nation, but there’s a lot more to the state than just its largest city.

The region was first inhabited by several Native American tribes and European settlers arrived in the early 1600s. The Dutch were the first visitors to settle there, but the British took over in 1664. The area was witness to many major battles during the American Revolution and it gained independence from Britain in 1776. New York then became the 11th state admitted to the union in 1788. It’s now the 27th largest by area in the USA and third in population with close to 20 million residents.

The state capital is Albany and some of the other major cities include Buffalo, Rochester, Niagara Falls, Syracuse, Yonkers, New Rochelle,

Mount Vernon, Utica, Schenectady, and Binghamton. The winters are usually pretty long and cold in New York while the summers are typically warm and humid.

The state is filled with diverse landscapes, cities, and cultures. You’ll find a spectacular mixture of valleys, mountains, rivers, parks, farms, lakes, and forests to go along with the big cities. In the northern area you can enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Adirondack Mountains and take part in endless outdoor activities in Adirondack Park, which is the largest state park in the country.

In the western area of the state you can visit the historic and amazing Niagara Falls, known as the honeymoon capital of the world. In the center of the state you’ll find Finger Lakes and in the mid-east there’s the beauty of the Catskill Mountains, which feature several recreational and historical activities.

As well as the world-class, cosmopolitan city of New York in the south, with its shopping, nightlife, museums, entertainment, restaurants, attractions, and galleries, etc., you can also visit the sandy beaches of Long Island for some excellent fishing and boating.

However, there’s no two ways about it, New York City is where most of the action is as its home to the majority of the major attractions such as the Empire State Building, Ellis Island, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and Broadway among others.

Driving into and around the state is quite interesting as it allows you to take in the wonderful scenery. However, driving in New York City can often result in major traffic jams. But there’s no need to drive in the city really as it has a great subway system as well as buses and taxis to take you around. There’s also an excellent rail system in both the city and the state. If you’re flying in, there are two major airports, La Guardia and JFK. You can also land in Newark, New Jersey. There’s also a good ferry system in place to visit some of the sites and to head over to New Jersey.

New York’s a paradise when it comes to sports lovers as the state is home to the Buffalo Bills NFL team, as well as the league’s New York Giants and New York Jets, who play in New Jersey. The New York Rangers, New York Islanders, and Buffalo Sabres all play hockey in the NHL, while the New York Knicks basketball team belongs to the NBA. The New York Red Bulls play soccer in the MLS, and the New York Yankees and Mets both play in Major League Baseball. There are also several minor-league pro teams as well as college sports. New York also hosts numerous world championship boxing matches as well as tennis tournaments and a variety of other sports.

There are all types of accommodations in the state. These include bed and breakfasts, inns, lodges, motels, and hotels that fall into all price ranges. The multicultural society of the region produces some excellent restaurants that serve up dishes from every corner of the world.

The state of New York offers everything you could imagine including history, arts, entertainment, sports, cultural events, fine dining, world-class attractions, superb scenery and excellent parkland. There’s more than enough to do here for weeks on end for people of all ages.
